The best place to start to understand the island's long and complex past is to visit the Waiheke Historical Museum located next to the golf course half way along the Onetangi straight. (See maps) Waiheke Community Library in the Art-Works complex, Oneroa, also has good historical reading material about Waiheke and the Hauraki Gulf. Look for works by historian Paul Monin and Dixie Day.
Pictured here tiled is the only grave at Thumb Point, marking the death of John Stephen Hooks in 1921 when aged 64 years.

Dixie Day's book of Waiheke Pioneers is a must read if Waiheke History has your interests. It cover's European history extremely well, with relative information on various families that came to Waiheke late 18 00s. You can purchase this book from the Waiheke Historic Museum or Oneroa bookshop.
