Pied Stilt - Waiheke
A graceful bird in flight, trailing its spindly, long red legs. Only a few places on Waiheke can you see these birds. They tend to hang around there own areas and stay there. Whakanewa Regional Park, Awawaroa and Te Matuku Bay create ideal habitats for them. Very high pitch "Yeeep!" when taking to the air in flocks up to 50 or more. Breeding in winter is common on Waiheke island having 2 to 4 eggs brown in colour. Incubated by both parents for 24 - 26 days.
