The Little Blue Penguin - Waiheke

During the early winter months, about 12 pairs live under Matiatia Wharf and can be seen walking across the road when all the buses and cars have departed from the area. These little fellows can swim up to 75 km a day. They are very fast swimmers. During summer months, for just a few weeks, hundreds of penquins are bobbing around looking for food, travelling around the Hauraki Gulf. Then all of a sudden they disappear. It seems unknown where they seem to have gone. I have often wondered if many get eaten by sharks.
